As the grayling turn and go down stream for the winter we get a unique opportunity to fish them on the bigger water. Fishing has been good and will hold out until we close when the fish leave. The nice weather this week has made for exceptional fishing so as promised I have pictures for some of our clients. Hopefully I will have copies of pictures from clients that got to see 2 bull caribou wander up river to within 50 feet of us before bolting back down stream! A unique experience! We have also had more opportunities to see the mountain than usual this week so the possibility of a Cantwell viewing is always a possibility. Fall is here at higher elevations and around the corner here in camp. With colder mornings comes fall fishing for big grayling on the Jack River!

It’s the last few weeks of the season but the fishing isn’t over. The jack is home to big black spawners as they come down from higher elevations following the bugs giving us a chance to fish the deeper holes for bigger fish.

Grayling full day trips are also doing very well out the Denali Highway. With the tundra changing to fall colors and the caribou on the move this is truly an amazing time to spend a day fishing the upper Nenana drainage for grayling!

Opportunities also abound to the South where subject to changes in water level big fall rainbows are still available. Recent rain has caused the Chulitna drainage to swell but water clarity in most streams is still good. Rain in the day or so previous will dictate if the streams will be too high for good walk in access.

Insect life has been loving all our sunny weather meaning hatches all times of the day and hatches of insects we don’t always see. Happy bugs means happy fish and there is nothing more satisfying than watching fish rise to your fly. Half day and full days are of course available so call to book!

Summer is flying by, the weather has been unusually nice and the salmon are in the rivers. With the salmon comes and opportunity to chase trophy grayling and rainbows eating eggs and salmon flesh! Unfortunately we do not offer these destinations on our half day trip so if it’s 16″-18″ grayling or rainbows into the 22″ & 24″ range glutted on salmon eggs you are looking for call for our full day availability. The Chulitna drainage is in the shadow of Mt. McKinley so on a mountain viewable day there may be good photo opportunities from the Parks Highway.

This is a walk in trip like our others and to insure success we must insist on good mobility as we often walk over a mile of rocky stream beds to find the best holes with the biggest fish.

With the rain comes higher water but it also brings the big ones back into their usual holes. It was a dry spring and some of our favorite holes are holding fish again thanks to this weeks rain. We’re also thankful to see the fire risk go down! Salmon are also starting to show up in the Parks Highway streams and the rainbows are with them. It only gets better from here!

The days are long, the mountain is out, the weather is hot, and the Grayling are done spawning so there are more big fish around! Fishing is good and the water is clear. Fish are taking on dries and small nymphs with an indicator. Full day options down the Parks highway should be available any day now that the salmon are showing up and the rainbows have followed. It was a late thaw but the weather and the fish are making up for it now! With July around the corner some of our best weather and best fishing is so close we can smell it and this summer it doesn’t smell like a forest fire (Knocking on wood).

I’ve been getting my fair share of sun burn. The mosquitoes have been a little thicker than usual the last few days but the fish have been incredibly active as a result. Although many clients have been averaging 4 to 1o fish many have caught upwards of 30 and 40 if they have the touch for a subtle hook set. The fish have finally started to move back into the higher country and fishing has been reported as good out the Denali Highway.

The Parks highway has been slow for Rainbows as far south as Byers Creek but should improve any day. In past years the rainbows show up about now but due to a late thaw everything has been about a week to 2 weeks behind.

We also regret to inform our jet boat hopefuls that we will no longer be taking jet boat trips due to the changes in one of our fishing holes that the jet boats run to upstream. The beavers don’t seem to be around and due to a broken damn the ponds we fished in the past are not holding fish and we take clients where the fish are. We are still having very productive half day and full day trips out the DH! Lots of dry fly action with the occasional nymphing opportunity in the deeper water or when the sun ducks behind a cloud.
